Flute Ensembles

During the past few decades, numerous transcribed and original works have been created for flute ensembles. The forces necessary for the performance of this repertoire vary from piece to piece both in terms of the number of parts involved and which registers of flutes (five of which are pictured below) are specified; no one instrumentation appears to have become dominant.

Flute ensemble music is heard most often in the context of tertiary educational institutions (conservatories, schools of music, and music departments) and in public school music programs where it is drawn upon for solo and ensemble competitions.
